“All humans make mistakes. What determines a person’s character aren’t the mistakes we make. It’s how we take those mistakes and turn them into lessons rather than excuses.”
Colleen Hoover is the #1 bestselling author for several of her works, including It Ends With Us. It’s a fiction & romance bestseller that was published on August 2, 2016 by Simon & Schuster. It Ends With Us holds a very personal connection with Colleen as she shares her childhood & the life of her mother through those characters as they lived in an abusive household too. The main inspiration of the book was her mother, Colleen wanted to write it for women like her mother & for people who never really understood the lives of those who lived in abusive households. She writes the story of her mother & father through the characters Lily & Ryle. During her journey of writing this book, Colleen realised that it’s not as black & white as it may seem to be from the outside & it really is an eye opener for many.
It Ends With Us is about a girl named Lily who is a hardworking, go-getter for the life that she wants. She grew up in a town called Maine & graduated college from. She moves to Boston in search of a better life where she meets Ryle Kincaid, a neurosurgeon in his final year of residency. Meeting him turns Lilly’s life upside down as she quickly discovers her feelings running deep for him, however, Ryle is completely against having a relationship. When questions about her relationship with Ryle overwhelm her, so do her thoughts about Atlas, her first love. When Atlas, her protector, her kindred spirit & her link to her past, reappears; all that she has built with Ryle is threatened.
It Ends With Us has been a heart-wrenching tale & one of those books that you just can’t put down. This book really touches upon topics that are a reality for thousands of people all over the world. Colleen shows the life of an abused mother & in the future, her daughter from their perspectives. It makes you realise that it’s much harder than we think, our first thoughts are “how could she even think of taking him back?” but; they might just be in love, it’s never easy cutting off feelings for someone as we may think. Throughout the book, the importance of communication in a relationship is shown in the way that Ryle & Lilly use their “naked truths”, their naked truths mean no sugar-coating how they feel, the cold & bitter truth always. Most importantly, I believe that Lilly’s growth as an individual & as a business person too are shown greatly. She takes a great risk of possibly losing her entire inheritance over opening a new flower shop but with her creativity & innovation, it becomes a huge success teaching us that sometimes risks can turn out to be an incredible thing. I may be totally biased because Colleen Hoover is one of my favourite authors, every single book written by her has been amazing. Romance books are my favourite & I totally fell in love with the flirty Ryle but I am immensely proud of how Lilly stood up for herself, stood up for her daughter & despite all the love she had for Ryle, took the step to think of the future of her daughter #TeamLilly.
I loved It Ends With Us just as much as I love every book that Colleen Hoover has written & would 100% recommend to everyone. It really portrays how difficult it can be to make the hardest decision of your life. I love how Colleen explores the subject of abuse, despite her wishing to delete every part of it from the book, she went forward with it. It’s a very a serious issue that she talked about really well. Her author’s note at the end of the book really touched me, her talking about her childhood watching the relationship between her mom & dad had to be difficult but through her journey, Colleen came to respect her mom way more. Colleen really knows how to keep you awake at night because you just don’t want to stop reading & sleep. It made me laugh, smile & cry so much, it’s amazing! As much as she has admitted to writing for entertainment with her previous works, this book has really been a lot more special & meaningful to her & to her readers. Other incredible books by her include: Confess, November 9, the Maybe Someday series & the Never Never series.
